The IoTwins project. How to improve stadium management through digital simulation
In the framework of the IoT Solutions World Congress, Albert Mundet, director of Barça Innovation Hub, presented last Thursday the IoTwins project. FC Barcelona collaborates in this project financed by European funds. It aims to change the model of management of high-flow infrastructures.
The Industry 4,0 will revolutionize the way in which new technologies in the organization of resources, people and assets are integrated. This change comes from advances in robotics, analytics, artificial intelligence, internet of things, etc.
The IoTwins project focuses on facilitating the implementation of this new stage. Through big data analysis, an improvement in the productivity, security and environmental impact of the Camp Nou can be achieved. These advances not only aim to take FC Barcelona to the next level in terms of venue management, but also become a new benchmark which can be extrapolated to any area: stadiums, airports or any other place with a large influx of people.
In order to obtain it, anonymous samples will be taken from the movements that the fans normally make in the facilities of the Club. Thanks to this initial study, a simulation will be created to reproduce assistants’ movements, making decision-making in real time possible.
With the aid of the BSC (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), a digital twin of the Camp Nou is being created in order to make possible the simulation of the movements of all the types of fan that attend the enclosure. This digital twin is based on Pandora, a simulation technology developed by the BSC.
In the long term, the digital twin tries to reduce agglomerations at the facilities and to settle down a new standard of security in this type of enclosures. Thanks to motion simulation, it is possible to plan, for example, which evacuation measures are the most efficient on each occasion. If it is possible to know beforehand how people will react, we can study what exits are more effective in an evacuation or how to distribute the assistants to avoid bottlenecks.
To facilitate the usability of all information extracted from real-time simulations, IoTwins relies on the cloud. This technology offers the possibility to process information remotely, without the need to have physical access to a computer with the necessary power. This is essential, since the required capacity of processing to analyze a great amount of data, as it can be the individual simulation of the movements of thousands of people, requires equipment of special characteristics. If it were essential to have a computer of this type for each implementation of the IoTwins project, the costs would increase drastically.
The implementation of this project will not only be done at the Camp Nou. Once the technology is proven, it will be transferred to Johan Cruyff stadium and other sectors, improving therefore the security and sport accessibility of commercial centers or other stages.
This project has received financing of the research program and innovation Union’s Horizon 2020 of the European Union under agreement Not 857191

In the words of Johan Cruyff, “Players, in reality, have the ball for 3 minutes, on average. So, the most important thing is: what do you do during those 87 minutes when you do not have the ball? That is what determines whether you’re a good player or not.”

Muscle injuries account for more than 30% of all injuries in sports like soccer. Their significance is therefore enormous in terms of training sessions and lost game time.
